In Oral Communications, students practice delivering speeches in front of the room. I plan to make this process paperless by using a class Moodle site. While students used to offer the speaker feedback on a piece of paper, they will now engage in a discussion forum in which they will communicate about the speaker's delivery style and methods. Prior to speaking, students will now be able to access embedded videos which consist of examples of effective speeches in that genre. Some of the embedded videos will be used in class as part of the learning process. Also, with a digital camera, I will start building the library of videos showing positive student examples for the moodle site for years to come. Students will receive an email with feedback from me on that particular speech. I will also use the Moodle calendar to show which students will present on which days. Hopefully, this paperless system will be more convenient for everyone.
The learning support teachers will appreciate knowing this too. They can look up things with the student and find out due dates and generally be able to support the students better.
It will certainly make things more convenient and a shy student will appreciate seeing what is expected. I used the Due Date Calendar on my Moodle for gym logs. I think once the students get used to using it they will take advantage of having all the information on-hand.
What a great idea Becky! I love the embedded video examples- students will know what to expect from you before they give their speech as well as see useful styles of delivery. As a homebound instructor I feel like I have won the lottery! Often I have students that need to deliver speeches and won't be returning to school. With your permission at the time it would be great to allow students to review the style of speech and then electronicaly thru doc cam video record the speech for grading.
Of course, Jan! You'll just have to email me to get the enrollment key if you ever want access!
This is a great idea! Not only will they be able to see examples of speeches they will get a lot of positive feedback from their peers that they could use for their next speech:)
Great idea! I love the idea of creating an archive of good examples for students in future classes. I will try to use the same idea to provide good examples of student writing pieces, independent reading projects, etc. Good job!
