Forum Discussion: Greek "Heroic Code"--Whose team are you on?
Heroic work in Homer's day was measured in fighting, pure and simple. Prowess on the battlefield was ranked supreme, high above any considerations of morality.
Heroes had a desire to excel. For the heroes, “excellent” was the norm. It was not enough to do well or simply to assist others to excellence: one had to shine.
Heroes often decide to fight and accept early death, rather than stay out of the battle and live long.
A hero's attitude was that he should make the most of his life while he (she?) had it!
Since it was not really worth attempting to preserve his life, the hero tried to secure everlasting fame and glory and thus reputation was all important.
Heroes may save lives.
