There are a several websites that allow you to upload your own content. Before you upload anything, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the site’s policies. In addition, you should be asking yourself three questions about the Internet services and products before you start using them:

1. Can I get my data out if I want to upload it somewhere else?

2. How much will it cost to get my data out?

3. How much time will it take to get my data out?

 The answers should be:

1. “Yes.”

2. “Nothing more than you’re already paying.”

3. “As little as possible.”

Some sites give you maximum control of your content by letting you take your information out of the service at any time. Think about moving into a new apartment, for example. If you were told you would have to leave all your belongings there—your furniture, clothes, books, television—when the lease ends, would you still choose to sign it? You don’t really control your data unless you can remove and put it elsewhere. If a website doesn’t give you control over your content, consider it a red flag.
