On this page are three political cartoons from the 1800s that show some of the feelings people held at the time about the Chinese and the Chinese Exclusion Act.

Political cartoons are very important primary sources for this reason -- they can show how people felt about a certain subject, and they are interesting to look at and analyze.

There is an assignment that goes along with these cartoons. You may want to open up the assignment sheet and have it available as you analyze the cartoons. When you are done with your analysis and assignment, you may move on to the next module.

Here are some things to think about as you look at the cartoons:

1) What do the words say and mean?
2) What symbols or images are used? What do they mean or represent?
3) What is the purpose of the cartoon?
4) What message is it trying to give or say?
5) Is it against Chinese exclusion or in favor of it?
6) How are the Chinese portrayed? Is it a fair or stereotypical portrayal?

Good luck!
