Assignment: Interview with a recent immigrant
Completion requirements
Pretend that you are a reporter in New York covering the immigration situation in New York City in the late 1800s. Your job is to tell readers what life is like for immigrants, and you want to interview a recent immigrant and tell his/her story (it is always more interesting to hear right from the source).
For your assignment, you will be "interviewing" a recent immigrant. Give that person a name, an ethnicity (where are they from) and "tell" their story based on what you have now read and learned about immigration.
You can choose any aspects of the immigration story, for example:
1) What their journey was like
2) What it was like to arrive at Castle Island or Ellis Island (or in the case of a person from Asia, Angel Island in California)
3) What it is like for the person now that he/she has arrived
You must include many details to bring that person's "story" to life. You may make up events, ideas, etc but the "story" must be authentic.
To present your work, you have three choices:
1) A written "interview" that will include the person's background, the questions that you asked, and their answers.
2) A recorded (audio) interview that includes the person's background, the questions that you asked, and their answers. You will need to be both the interviewer and the interviewee!
3) A videotaped interview that includes the same information as above.
In order to receive an "A" you must do either choice 2 or 3. If you do choice 1 the highest score you can receive is a "B."
You will be scored on the following:
1) Use of authentic details that bring the story to life
2) Creativity
3) Organization of presentation (clearly presented, orderly, rehearsed, etc)
4) General perceived effort
This assignment is worth 30 points.
In order to complete the interview assignment, please do the following:
1) Complete the assignment in whatever manner/format you choose. (Quick Time videos, etc)
2) Save your document as (last name)Interview. For example, WilsonInterview.
3) Below, click on browse.
4) Find your file and open it
5) Your file should appear in the little box.
6) Click on Upload this file to send it
When you are done with the assignment you may move on to the next module. Good luck! I can't wait to see what you come up with!
